Kitsch-free souvenir stores

Vienna – Sisi and Strauss free zones: visitors can now pick up keepsakes from a number of new souvenir stores that have turned their backs on the tired old tourist clichés.

The Viennastore is the coolest new arrival on the capital’s kitsch free souvenir scene, starting with its unusual location: Vienna’s first high rise, which was built in the 1930s on Herrengasse just a short distance from the Hofburg. Run by Vienna’s Metroverlag publishing house, the souvenir shop is all about high-quality design from the capital and the rest of the world. The urban design classics on sale include playing cards by Piatnik, the Melon service by Augarten-Porzellan (designed by Josef Hoffmann) and coffee from Viennese roastery Naber, as well as some products of its own including a set of bowls for preparing Wiener Schnitzel and attractive postcards featuring images of Vienna in days gone by. There are also countless books on Vienna printed by Metroverlag to choose from.

Wienhandlung in Vienna’s hip and happening Freihausviertel in the fourth district is a store and bar beloved of locals and visitors alike who are looking to get away from the well-worn Vienna clichés. Viennese wine from Christ, Edlmoser, Cobenzl and Wieninger are available by the bottle or glass, alongside potato goulash and delicious hams. There are also specialty coffee roasts from the famous Café Hawelka with cups to go with them, Ottakringer beer, vinegar from Gegenbauer, Viennese honey, Vienna books and Wienerlied CDs.

Viennastore and Wienhandlung are also the places to pick up luxury versions of the classic 1/8l glasses found in Vienna’s Heuriger wine taverns. Glass mugs featuring golden wine leaf motifs are produced by Das Goldene Wiener Herz, who also make porcelain beakers with images of Viennese Art Nouveau buildings picked out in gold leaf. All of these souvenirs are available from Das Goldene Wiener Herz on Spittelberg in the seventh district, as well as countless retailers and museum shops such as the recently redesigned MQ Point– the MuseumsQuartier Wien ticket and design store. Other highlights lining the shelves include handmade porcelain from Mano Design, Lomo cameras, and fashion from various Viennese labels.
