Our newly announced series of Concerts by Candlelight in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse continues to champion and explore music and spoken word from across genres, continents and time. A host of world-class artists and ensembles includes John Williams, Janie Dee, Roger Allam with Angela Hewitt and Joanna MacGregor. The innovative Aurora Orchestra is joined by Katherine Parkinson and Samuel West in Kreutzer vs Kreutzer, Arcangelo joins forces with star countertenor Iestyn Davies, and the renowned Folger Consort is accompanied by Derek Jacobi in his first Globe appearance. we also enjoy the exquisite voices of Alamire, who will fill the Playhouse with sumptuous Tudor choral music.
There is a distinctly international flavour to the season. From the Flamenco passion of Iberian Nights to the extraordinary Isango Ensemble from South Africa, who return with an intimate version of their acclaimed production of Mysteries. Elsewhere there’s a taste of jazz, Gaelic, French, and early modern music as well as instruments as diverse as the didgeridoo, Venezuelan harp, Irish bodhran and the Middle Eastern oud. For those who enjoy an epic experience, the Carducci String Quartet commemorate the 40th anniversary of Shostakovich’s death with an all-day presentation of all fifteen of his ground-breaking string quartets.
