Indeed, Oscar Wilde made many trips to Paris between 1883 and 1890, and died in poverty and misery after his conviction for homosexuality in London in 1895. He was a friend of André Gide, Peter Louÿs, attended Mallarme, Verlaine and Victor Hugo. He wrote directly in French his play Salome that he intended the title role in Sarah Bernhardt.
